What substances are shown in the periodic table?
elements
1 of 12
What is a compound?
two or more elements combined together
2 of 12
What is the atomic number?
the number of protons and also the number of electrons (not added together)
3 of 12
What is the mass number?
the total number of particles in the nucleus- the number of protons and the number of neutrons
4 of 12
How is an ionic compound formed?
a metal reacts with a non metal
5 of 12
What is ionic bonding?
the metal loses electrons and becomes a positive ion. the non metal gains an electron to form a negative ion. The oppositely charged ions attract each other.
6 of 12
How is a covalent bond formed?
when a metal reacts with a non metal and they share electrons
7 of 12
What determines the order of the elements in the periodic table?
there atomic number
8 of 12
How do you represent ionic bonds?
using dot and cross diagrams
9 of 12
What structure is ionic bonding?
they are in giant structures with strong electrostatic forces of attraction acting in all directions. each ion is surrounded by by ions with the opposite charge so it's held in place
10 of 12
What are substances held together by covalent bonding called?
molecules
11 of 12
What is metallic bonding?
when metal ions pack together the electrons in the outer shell delocalise and move freely between atoms. These electrons strongly attract the positive ions and hold it all together
