What is an atom?
An atom is the smallest particle of a chemical element that can exist.
1 of 12
What is an element?
An element is something that consists of only one type of atom.
2 of 12
What does an atom consist of?
Atoms consist of a nucleus which contains protons and neutrons, and electrons which are found in the shells surrounding the nucleus.
3 of 12
What is the charge and mass of protons, neutrons and electrons?
Protons have a positive charge of +1 and a mass of 1. Neutrons have no charge and a mass of 1. Electrons have a negative charge of -1 and a mass of 0.
4 of 12
What is the overall charge of an atom? Why?
Atoms have no overall charge because the positive protons are cancelled out by the negative electrons and the neutrons have no charge so the atom remains neutral.
5 of 12
What is ionic bonding?
Ionic bonding is the process of an atom gaining or losing electrons to form a full outer shell.
6 of 12
What is covalent bonding?
Covalent bonding is the sharing of electrons between atoms to create a full outer shell of electrons.
7 of 12
What is the general electron configuration of an atom?
2,8,8,18...
8 of 12
What relation does the group number on the periodic table have with an element?
The group number on the periodic table determines how many electrons will be in the outer shell of the atom.
9 of 12
What relation does the period on the periodic table have with an element?
The period number determines how many shells there will be surrounding the nucleus in the atom.
10 of 12
What is the atomic number in an atom?
The atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus of the atom, which is equal to the number of electrons in the shells surrounding the nucleus.
11 of 12
What is the atomic mass in an atom?
The atomic mass tells you the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of the atom.
