What is atomic number?
The atomic number of an atom is the number of protons in an atom
1 of 18
What is atomic mass?
Atomic mass is the total umber of protons plus neutrons.
2 of 18
What is an isotope of an element
An isotope is the same element but with a different number of neutrons.
3 of 18
What is an atoms overall charge?
An atoms overall charge is neutral as the number of positively charged protons is equal to negatively charged electrons.
4 of 18
What is the symbol for a carbon isotope
C-12
5 of 18
How do you work out the number of neutrons in a atom?
You minus the atomic number from the atomic mass.
6 of 18
How are electrons arranged?
Electrons are arranged in energy shells around the atom ( discrete energy levels) .
7 of 18
What's the maximum capacity of electrons on each shell?
2 electrons on the first, 8 on the second and third and 2 on the fourth.
8 of 18
What group would Fluroine be in if. (Flourine has 9 electrons)
Fluroine would be in group 7 as it has seven electrons on the outside shell.

What were John Datons main 5 conclusions?
1. All matter is made of Atoms 2. Atoms cannot be broken down into anything simpler. 3.All atoms of a particular element are identical 4.Atoms are rearraged in a chemical reaction 5.Compounds are formed when two or more atoms join together

Who discovered the electron and when?
Thompson discovered the electron in 1897
11 of 18
Who concluded that the atom must contain a smaller nucleus?
Ernest Rutherford concluded this in 1911
12 of 18
Who discovered electron orbits/shells?
Bohr concluded that electrons must occupy particular orbits around an atom
13 of 18
What was Geiger and Marsdens experient?
A beam of Alpha particles was fired at a thin gold foil. Some Alpha particles emerged at different points and some came straight back.
14 of 18
What did Geiger and Marsden conclude?
As some Alpha particles were repelled and some came out at different angles they concluded that there must be a small concentration of positive charge inside the atom.
15 of 18
What is the radius of a typical atom?
10-10m
16 of 18
What is the mass of a typical atom?
10-23g
