These are just questions on atomic structure, I am going to make similar revision cards for each of the other topics of unit 1. I hope these can be of use to you.

The number of protons in an atom therefore also the amount of electrons.

To separate ions out which have a different mass and to help identify complex molecules with the help of their Mr

Explain what happens in vaporisation in mass spectrometry
A sample is vaporised so that it is in the gaseous state

What happens in ionisation in mass spectrometry?
An electron gun fires high energy electrons at the sample causing positive ions to form

What happens in acceleration in mass spectrometry?
Ions are accelerated by an electric field, the ions are focussed into a beam by passing through a series of slits

Explain what happens in deflection
The beam of electrons is deflected by a strong magnetic field, magnitude depends on the m/z ratio- a small m/z value means large deflection

How would you work out relative abundance from mass spectrum data?
(The sum of each of the relative mass of each isotope x fractional abundance of each isotope) / the sum of each of the relative abundances or divide by 100 if you are working out percentage

How do you find out relative molecular mass from mass spectrum data?
The peak with the highest m/z value is usually the Mr of the element

State three things about the electron arrangement in atoms
1.Electrons are found in energy levels (shells) 2. The energy level with the lowest energy is closest to the nucleus 3. Electrons occupy the lowest energy levels when in the ground state

The amount of energy required to remove one mole of electrons from a gaseous atom

Explain the trend in first ionisation energies
Decreases down a group because the outer electron is more shielded from the attraction of the nucleus

Explain the discontinuity between group 2 and 3 elements
Group 3 outer electron easier to remove than group 2 because gp 2 outer electron in 2s or 3s orbital, gp 3 outer electrons are in 2p or 3p which are higher in energy and therefore experiences more shielding
