What is the definition of an element?
An element is made up of one type of atom and cannot be broken down into anything simpler/smaller
1 of 14
What is the definition of a compound?
A compound is made up of two or more types of atom chemically bonded together
2 of 14
How does a compound differ to a mixture?
In a mixture the substances are not bonded together so they can be easily separated but a compound cannot
3 of 14
What sub-atomic particles are atoms made of?
Atoms are made up of sub-atomic particles called protons, neutrons and electrons
4 of 14
Where are each of the sub-atomic particles in an atom found?
The proton(s) and neutron(s) are found in the nucleus but the electron(s) are found on the energy level(s)
5 of 14
What is the mass number equal to?
The mass number is equal to the amount of protons in an atom plus the number of neutrons
6 of 14
What is the charge and relative mass of a proton?
Mass = 1 | Relative Charge = +1
7 of 14
What is the charge and relative mass of a neutron?
Mass = 1 | Relative Charge = 0
8 of 14
What is the charge and relative mass of an electron?
Mass = ~0 | Relative Charge = 1-
9 of 14
What is the definition of an isotope?
Isotpoes are atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons (they both react in the same way, one is simply heavier!) To find the number of neutrons subtract the proton number from the mass number
10 of 14
How many electrons can go on an energy level?
Level 1 = 2 | Level 2 onwards = 8
11 of 14
Where are the noble gases found on the periodic table?
The noble gases are found in group 0, the far right hand column. They all have full outer energy levels
12 of 14
What is the definition of ionic bonding?
Ionic bonding occurs when a metal and a non-metal react together. It involves transfer of electron(s) in order to achieve a full outer energy level. This results in the formation of oppositely charged ions which attract each other electrostatically
13 of 14
What is the definition of covalent bonding?
Covalent bonding occurs when two or more non-metals react together. It involves the sharing of electron(s) of the outermost energy level to achieve a full outer energy level. When an atom bonds covalently molecules are formed
