What is the atomic number?
The number of protons (and the number of electrons) in a neutral atom of a given element
1 of 11
What is the mass number?
The number of protons plus the number of neutrons in an atom of a given element
2 of 11
What charges do protons, electrons and neutrons carry?
A proton carries a single positive charge; an electron carries a single negative charge; a neutron carries no charge
3 of 11
What is an anion?
A negatively charged ion (the atom has gained one or more electrons)
4 of 11
What is a cation?
A positively charged ion (the atom has lost one or more electrons)
5 of 11
What is meant by the term 'isotope'?
Atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons. Isotopes have different mass numbers.
6 of 11
Explain why isotopes of the same element have the same chemical properties.
Isotopes of the same element still have the same no. of electrons/electron configuration, and chemical properties depend on the outer arrangements of electrons and the way they are shared. Varying numbers of neutrons would have no effect on this.
7 of 11
What is the 'standard atom' that the masses of other atoms are compared to?
The Carbon-12 atom. The Ar of carbon-12 is defined as 12. E.g. one magnesium-24 atom has twice the mass of a carbon-12 atom.
8 of 11
What is the relative atomic mass of an element?
The average mass number of all of the naturally occurring isotopes of an element
9 of 11
What does a 'group' in the periodic table correspond to?
The number of electrons in the outermost shell
10 of 11
What does a 'period' in the periodic table correspond to?
The number of occupied shells
