Atomic Structure

?
What did Robert Boyle discover?
Chemical elements - some substance could not be made simpler.
1 of 24
What did John Dalton discover?
Atoms of the same element have the same mass. Atoms cannot be broken down.
2 of 24
Who discovered radioactivity?
Henri Becquerel.
3 of 24
Who made up the plum pudding model?
JJ Thompson
4 of 24
What did Ernest Rutherford discover?
Most of the mass and all positive charge came from a nucleus.
5 of 24
What relative charge does a proton have?
+1
6 of 24
What relative mass does an electron have?
1/1840
7 of 24
What is the mass number?
Number of protons + number of neutrons.
8 of 24
What makes up most of the mass of an atom?
Protons and nuetrons.
9 of 24
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons in the nucleus.
10 of 24
Why most atoms neutral?
The number of protons is equal to the number of electrons so the charges balance out.
11 of 24
Do atoms of the same element have the same atomic number?
Yes.
12 of 24
What is an isotope?
An atom witht eh same number of protons and electrons but a different number of neutrons.
13 of 24
What do isotopes of the same element have the same chemical properties?
They have the same number of electrons as eachother.
14 of 24
What does a mass spectrometer do?
Determine the relative atomic mass of a substance.
15 of 24
What happens in a time of flight mass spectrometer?
A sample is dissolved in a solvent and forced through a tiny hole which produces positively charged ions. Then positive ions are attracted towards a negative plate and accelerate towards it. Ions pass through a hole in the negative plate.
16 of 24
How to work out atomic mass of isotopes:
Multiply each atomic mass by their abundance and divide by the total abundance.
17 of 24
What are the 4 types of orbitals?
S-orbitals , P-orbitals , D-orbitals , F-orbitals.
18 of 24
How many P orbitals are there in each energy level?
3 per energy level.
19 of 24
Elements in group 1&2 have _ - orbitals as their highest energy level.
S-orbitals
20 of 24
What is the definition of ionisation energy?
The energy required to remove ONE MOLE of electrons from ONE MOLE of gaseous atoms to form ONE MOLE of gaseous positive ions.
21 of 24
How does charge in the nucleus affect ionisation energy?
The more charge in the necleus the greater the nuclear pull and so the more energy required to remove an electron?
22 of 24
What is the trend in ionisation energy across a period?
General increase across the period due to increased nuclear charge. The bigger the period the less energy required due to shielding and distance.
23 of 24
Why is there a slight decrease in ionisation energy when electrons are doubled up?
There is a repulsion force between the electrons.
