Atomic and mass number flash cards

HideShow resource information
What are the atomic and mass numbers?
Two numbers which tell you how many of each kind of particle an atom has
1 of 6
What does the Mass number tell you?
The total number of protons and neutrons
2 of 6
What does the Atomic number tell you?
The total number of protons
3 of 6
How do you work out the number of neutrons?
Take away the atomic number from the mass number. E.g. for Sodium (Na) 23-11=12
4 of 6
Why are electrons not counted in the Mass number?
Electrons are not counted in the mass number because their relative mass is very small
5 of 6
What is the relative mass of each particle?
Proton: 1 Neutron:1 Electron: Very small
