Boxing Day 2004 - most of the surrounding areas were involved ( India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia - 13 in total), USGS knew hours before but couldn't warn the people as it's an LEDC, 9 on the Richter Scale and wave magnitude was 15m at shore.

Causes
Indo-Australian plate subducted beneath the Eurasian plate off-shore, the release of energy caused a massive water displacement as the Eurasian plate was dragged down and created a massive wave when it snapped back into position.

Environmental effects
Salt water ruined crops/vegetation for a very long time, unique habitats were destroyed (coral reefs).

Economic effects
No quantifiable measure of personal and governmental loss, lost livelihoods of fishers, tourism was in ruins.

Social effects
230,000 deaths/unaccounted for, 2 million homeless, coastal towns wiped away, no power/water, 6 million needed food, medicine etc.

Short term responses
Millions given by the public/rich individuals/charities etc , worldwide appeal for aid, governments multilaterally came together to send help on a megascale.

Long term response
multilateral and bilateral aid to re-establish tourism, livelihoods and fishing, developed early warning systems, disaster management plans, locals have specialist knowledge.
