What is data?

Information is data that has been processed by a computer so has been given a meaning and context. For example, house numbers - 2,4,5,6,4,3,2,

What is knowledge?
Knowledge is a set of rules of a rule that is applied to information to be able to manipulate it. For example, if the temperature that was predicted for the next day were 0, -1,-2,0,1 then you know it is cold so will need a coat.

What is encoding?
Encoding is where data is entered into a computer in coded form which makes the data shorter. For example male and female could be shortened to M or F.

What are the advantages of encoding data?
Encoding needs less memory space; it's quicker to enter; can be validated more easily.

What are the disadvantages of encoding?
The codes can be hard to understand if you don't know what the codes are; can be hard to remember all the codes; accuracy can be lost.

What is important for good quality information?
That the information is up to date; accurate and complete.

How does good quality information add value to organisations?
By aiding decision making, monitoring progress and targeting resources.
