What does the annual budget of a glacier describe?
the input/output relationships of ice, firn and snow
1 of 15
What four processes can a glacier move by?
Basal sliding; Creep; Extending-compressing flow; Internal deformation
2 of 15
What four categories can glaciers be put in?
Corrie glacier; Valley glacier; Piedmont glacier; Ice sheet
3 of 15
What theories are there for the cause of glaciation?
Milankovitch cycle; Varied sunspot activity; Varied carbon dioxide in atmosphere; Movement of ocean currents; Extreme volcanic activity
4 of 15
What is a corrie glacier?
Occupies small hollows mainly on the sheltered north-facing slopes of mountains
5 of 15
What is a valley glacier?
Linear masses of ice which move along pre-existing river valleys in the mountains
6 of 15
What is a piedmont glacier?
Form when valley glaciers spread out on to low-lying areas and merge to form a single ice mass
7 of 15
What is an ice cap/sheet?
An extremely large mass of ice which covers whole mountain ranges or whole continents e.g. Antarctica
8 of 15
Name an input of a glacier
Falling snow and sometimes avalanches
9 of 15
Name a store of a glacier
The glacier itself is a store, in the form of frozen water
10 of 15
Name an output of a glacier
Evaporation; Melting; Calving (ice breaks off into water)
11 of 15
What is the zone of accumulation?
The upper part of a glacier where inputs exceed outputs
12 of 15
What is the zone of ablation?
The lower part of a glacier where outputs exceed inputs
13 of 15
What is meant by the term 'net balance'?
The difference between accumulation and ablation for a whole glacier over a year
14 of 15
What are corrie lakes, or tarns, used for?
Hydro-electric power (HEP)
