Direct effect
Allows individuals to rely upon EU law before national courts even if the Member State has not implemented the EU law.

Can be taken into account but doesn't have to be followed. Not binding.

Allows individuals to rely upon a European provision against another individual or private company.

Compels national courts to interpret 'so far as possible' national legislation in accordance with the aims of a Directive.
