Oceanic crust
0-10km deep, made of dense mafic igneous rocks called bassalt and grows at around 17km^3 per year.
1 of 10
Continental Crust
0-75km deep, made of less dense felsic rocks and minerals such as quartz and feldspars.
2 of 10
Lithosphere
10-200km down which includes the crust and a section of the upper mantle
3 of 10
Asthenosphere
A layer of mantle below the lithosphere with a rheid texture containing olivine and pyroxene minerals.
4 of 10
Rheid
A rock with a plastic-like properties allows a small 'flow' due to partial melting.
5 of 10
Heights of the layers
Crust - 35km (MOHO), Upper mantle - 700km, Lower mantle - 2900km (GUTENBURG) , Outer core - 5100km (LEHMANN), Centre of earth, 6371km
6 of 10
Shadow zones
P waves -
7 of 10
Ophiolite suite
An area of peridotite from within the mantle has risen up and has cooled on the surface
8 of 10
Paleomagnetism
The study of the record of the Earth's magnetic field in rocks, (Sea floor spreading, polar wandering) e.g lodestone
9 of 10
Curie point
The temperature at which minerals in the rock lose their permanent magnetic properties, to be replaced by induced magnetism.
