AS Chemistry - Covalent Bonding

?
Define a covalent bond
The strong electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of the bonded atoms
1 of 6
Define a dative covalent (coordinate) bond
A shared pair of electrons in which the bonded pair has been provided by one of the bonding atoms only
2 of 6
Describe the structure of covalently bonded molecules
They can be either simple covalent or giant covalent
3 of 6
Describe the melting point of covalent bonds
High – a lot of energy is needed to break the many strong covalent bonds between the atoms
4 of 6
Describe the conductivity of covalent bonds
Poor electrical conductivity – There are no mobile charge carriers. Ions are not present. There are no delocalised electrons because they are held in place within the covalent bonds between the atoms
5 of 6
Describe the solubility of covalent bonds
Insoluble – The bonds between the atoms are very strong. Water is a polar solvent but it is not attracted to the neutral atoms.
