Somatic Arousal (PHYSIOLOGICAL)
Are the changes which a performer experiences with increase/decrease in arousal
3 of 12
Effects of over arousal
1. Attentional Narrowing 2. Attentional Wastage
4 of 12
Attentional Narrowing
Focus is limited to only some stimuli and the performer may miss important stimuli as a result
5 of 12
Attentional Wastage
Concentration is mis-directed to cues that may be irrelevant to their performance
6 of 12
Appropriate Levels of Arousal
1. Zone of Optimum Functioning 2. Peak Flow Experience
7 of 12
Zone of Optimum Functioning
The unique level of arousal which allows a performer to perform with maximum concentration and effort.
8 of 12
Peak Flow Experience
A comprehensive feeling of well-being occuring when all psychological and physiological variables align giving the best possible performance.
9 of 12
Drive Theory
Suggests a linear relationship so as arousal increases so does performance
10 of 12
Inverted U Theory
Suggests as arousal increases so does performance but only to an optimum point an increase in arousal beyond this level will result in a decrease in performance
11 of 12
Catastrophe Theory
Suggests that an increase in arousal will improve performance but if over arousal starts to occur then the performer may start to worry This can lead to a dramatic drop in performance.
