Main Olmec occupation. Clay and earthen pyramids.

125,000 inhabitants. Precise gridplan and intersecting streets. Grew to dominate the area so other urban centres declined.

Why did Teotihuacan grow so large?
Near springs which allowed for irrigation. Obsidian working. Ideological factors. Evidence of trade throughout Mesoamerica.

What was the settlement Tula like?
Toltec capital. Destroyed late 12th Century. Ball court and stepped pyramid.

Olmecs, Valleys of Oxaca and Mexico, Maya, Toltecs, Aztecs.

Mayan hearthland. Centred around natural wells. No planned housing. Pyramid with 9 tiers (region of the dead).

Aztec capital. Muddy island in a lake. 1521 destroyed by Spaniards, Mexico City built on the spot. Laid out as a gridplan. Central walled ceremonial precinct.

What caused the decline in Central American settlements?
Most settlements witnessed declines, probably due to politcla instability and changing roles of different groups. Also environmental decline in some areas.
