Definition of a Desert?
Deserts are arid (dry) environments that recieve less than 250mm of rainfall per year.

Around 30 degrees North and South of the Equator, in the middle of continents, Next to mountain ranges and near cold ocean currents

What is the Rainshadow Effect?
1) tall mountain ranges force wind upwards, 2) air rises it cools, 3) moisture is dropped over mountains, 4) wind blows inland Example Atacama Desert, South America

1) Cold ocean currents run along the coastline, 2) wind is cooled over cool water, 3) moisture realsed over ocean, 4) wind blows inland Example Namib Desert, Africa

What is the Sub-tropical High Pressure Cell?
1) air rises at equator, 2) air cools and moisture condenses, 3) air descends creating zone of high pressure, 4) winds blow outwards so no moisture can be brought in Example Sahara Desert, Africa
