AQA Biology 3 b

?
Two main causes of increase in human population-
Development in modern farming/medicine methods- less people dying of hunger/disease
1 of 23
Three ways humans are increasing the demands on their environment-
1. Taking more resources. 2. Producing more waste. 3. Using more land
2 of 23
Three types of pollution-
1. Water. 2. Land. 3. Air
3 of 23
Describe how humans affect the pollution in waterways-
sewage and industrial waste can pollute water supplies, as we as agricultural chemicals (such as fertilisers) that can be washed into water
4 of 23
Describe how humans affect the pollution of land-
toxic agricultural chemicals, burial of radioactive nuclear waste and the disposal of huge quantities of hosuehold waste in landfill
5 of 23
Describe how humans affect the pollution in air-
Emittance of smoke and other hamrful gases from processes such as burning fossil fuels to generate electricity (ie SO2 = acid rain)
6 of 23
Humans reduce the quantity of land avaliable to other living things by:
1. Building. 2. Farming. 3. Disposing of Waste. 4. Quarrying
7 of 23
4 factors to consider when constructing a biogas generator-
Cost, Convienience, Efficiency, Position
8 of 23
Describe how carbon dioxide contributes to the greenhouse effect-
Gases in atmosphere are natural insulation (absorb heat radiated from earth and reflect it in all directions, includingback to earth) increase in CO2 causes an increase in insulating properties of atmosphere (greenhouse effect)
9 of 23
3 main stores of CO2
Green plants, Oceans river and lakes, Peat bogs
10 of 23
Biogas is produced by aerobic/anaerobic fermentation of organic material-
Anaerobic
11 of 23
List results of climate change-
Change in distribution of species, Change in migration patterns, Rise in sea level (hot water expands, ice caps melt), More extreme weather.... all leading to a reduction in biodiversitty
12 of 23
Three reasons deforestation occurs-
Tinber for building, clear land for agricultural purposes (either biofuel crops or food), Paper production
13 of 23
Four benefits of using biogas as a fuel
ANY FROM: carbon neutral so does not contribute to greenhouse effect, Doesmt produce as many harmful chemicals (sulphur dioxide), Burning methane means not released into atmosphere (GH effect), Raw material is cheap, Good fertilizer, Waste disposal
14 of 23
Four environmental consequences of deforestation-
More methane (microbes in rice paddies, cow farts), More CO2 (burning trees, microbes feeding on dead wood respiring), Less CO2 absorbed (less photosynthesis), Less biodiversity (less habitat)
15 of 23
Why does destroying peat bogs contribute to the amount of CO2-
Restarts the decomposition of the plant material in the bog, so CO2 is released as a product of the respiration of the microbes
16 of 23
3 main ways to increase efficiency of food production-
Reduce no. of stages in food chain (crops not beef), Restrict energy loss from animals done by a) limiting movement and b)controlling temperature of surroundings
17 of 23
Three effects of overfishing-
Less food for us, Affect on marine food chains, Risk of extinction
18 of 23
Which fungus produces mycoprotein-
Fusarium
19 of 23
Two methods to control fishing (making sure its sustainable)-
Fishing quotas- official limits on size/number, Net sizes- larger mesh means reduction in discarded fish and younger fish can escape, reach breeding age
20 of 23
Mycoprotein is made by the aerobic/anaerobic fermentation of what material?
Aerobic, Glucose syrup
21 of 23
Negatives of efficient food production-
Cruelty of conditions, Crowded conditions make favourable environment for spread of disease, Injestment of animal antibiotics=microbes can develop immunity=less effective as human medicines, Temperature control means burning fossil fuels
22 of 23
What are 'food miles'?
The distance a food product travels during distribution. As transport usually involves burning of fossil fuels (planes, lorries etc) the smaller the food miles, the better for the environment

Good resource! Really helped me because I have the exam next Tuesday and my teacher didn't cover much of 3b.
