What is homeostasis ?
How the body keeps the conditions inside the same. E.g. the same temperature (37 degrees) & amount of water.
1 of 16
Why does water in the body need to be controlled?
To protect cells from either too much water leaving or entering them.
2 of 16
How is water content controlled?
The lungs>when we exhale - The skin>when we sweat - Passing of urine> produced by the kidneys.
3 of 16
Why is the temperature of the body controlled?
To maintain the temperature at which enzymes work best.
4 of 16
How is body temperature controlled?
By sweating, shivering and controlling blood flow to the skin.
5 of 16
Why do blood sugar levels need to be controlled?
To provide cells with a constant supply of energy.
6 of 16
How is the blood sugar level controlled in the body?
By the release and storage of glucose, which is controlled by insulin.
7 of 16
What are hormones?
Chemicals secreted by glands in the body.
8 of 16
What transports the hormones?
The blood stream.
9 of 16
What do hormones do?
Regulate the functions of many cells and organs.
10 of 16
What does the brain contain that controls the pituitary gland?
Hypothalamus
11 of 16
What does the thyroid gland do?
It produces thyroxine, which controls the rate of metabolism.
12 of 16
What do adrenal glands do?
Produce adrenaline which prepares the body for raid activity, by increasing the heart rate as well as the level of sugar in the blood. It also diverts the blood to muscles and the brain.
13 of 16
What does the pancreas do?
It produces insulin which controls blood sugar levels.
14 of 16
What do ovaries do?
They produces oestrogen which causes changes at puberty & helps to control the menstrual cycle.
15 of 16
What do testes do?
The produce testosterone, which causes changes at puberty and stimulates sperm production.
