What happens during photosynthesis?
Light energy is absorbed by a green chlorophyll, which is found in chloroplasts in some plant cells and algae. This energy is used to convert carbon dioxide (from the air) and water (from the soil) into glucose. Oxygen is released as a by product
1 of 10
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water ----> glucose + oxygen (light energy and chlorophyll must be present)
2 of 10
What factors might limit photosynthesis?
light intensity, low temperature, limited carbon dioxide, limited water supply
3 of 10
How does light intensity affect the rate of photosynthesis?
As light intensity increases so does rate because light is needed in photosynthesis but rate will slow (level off) when another factor is limited
4 of 10
How does carbon dioxide supply affect the rate of photosynthesis?
As CO2 increases so does rate because CO2 is used in photosynthesis but rate will slow (level off) when another factor is limited
5 of 10
How does water supply affect the rate of photosynthesis?
As water increases so does rate because water is used in photosynthesis but rate will slow (level off) when another factor is limited
6 of 10
How does temperature affect the rate of photosynthesis?
As temperature increases, so does the rate and then it decreases because a rise in temp increases rate of chemical reactions/more kinetic energy so more collisions. It then decreases because the enzyme is denatured after their optimum temperature
7 of 10
What is the glucose made during photosynthesis used for in plants?
The glucose produced in photosynthesis may be converted into insoluble starch for storage. Plant cells use some of the glucose produced during photosynthesis for respiration.
8 of 10
What is the glucose made in photosynthesis sometimes used for in plants and algae?
to produce fat or oil for storage; to produce cellulose, which strengthens the cell wall; to produce proteins.
9 of 10
What else do plants need to produce proteins?
NITRATE ions that are absorbed from the soil
