What are the systems in multi cellular organisms used for?
Exchanging substances. Organ systems are groups of organs that perform a particular function
1 of 20
What is a tissue?
a group of cells with similar structure and function
2 of 20
What do muscle tissues do?
contract to bring about movement
3 of 20
What do glandular tissues do?
produce substances such as enzymes and hormones
4 of 20
What do epithelial tissues do?
covers some parts of the body
5 of 20
What is an organ?
A group[ of tissues that work together to perform a function. One organ may contain several tissues
6 of 20
What 3 main tissues are found in the stomach and what do they do?
(1) muscular tissue, to churn the contents (2) glandular tissue, to produce digestive juices (3) epithelial tissue, to cover the outside and the inside of the stomach
7 of 20
What are the main parts of the digestive system?
salivary glands, stomach, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, liver
8 of 20
Which parts of the digestive system does food actually pass through?
stomach, small intestine, large intestine
9 of 20
What do the different parts of the digestive systemglands, such as the pancreas and salivary glands, which produce digestive juices ■ the stomach and small intestine, where digestion occurs ■ the liver, which produces bile ■ the small intestine, do?
pancreas and salivary glands produce enzymes, digestion occurs in stomach and small intestine, liver produces bile, small intestine is also where absorption of soluble food occurs, large intestine is where water is absorbed
10 of 20
What are some organs in a plant?
Stem, leaf, root, flower
11 of 20
What is the internal structure of a leaf cell?
Thin, waxy cuticle on top and bottom; thin, transparent upper and lower epidermis; layer of palisade cells on the top surface; spongy mesophyll inside the leaf, stomata (with guard cells) in the lower epidermis
12 of 20
What does the waxy cuticle on the outside of a leaf do?
Protects the leaf without blocking out light
13 of 20
What does the thin, transparent epidermis cells on the top and bottom of the leaf do?
Allow more light to reach the palisade cells
14 of 20
What do the palisade mesophyll cells in a leave do?
Absorb light for photosynthesis
15 of 20
What does the spongy mesophyll layer in a leave do?
Has air spaces allow carbon dioxide to diffuse through the leaf, and increase the surface area
16 of 20
What do the guard cells/stomata on the bottom of leaf do?
Guard cells control whether the stomata is open or closed, stomata allow gas exchange/diffusion of CO2 in and O2 out of the leaf
17 of 20
Which cells in a leaf contain chloroplasts?
Palisade MESOPHYLL and guard cells (for photosynthesis)
18 of 20
What are xylem tissues in a plant used for?
They transport water and dissolved minerals around the plant
19 of 20
What are phloem tissues in a plant used for?
They transport dissolved sugar around the plant
