Oscillations
All waves are a series of oscillations that transfer energy from one place to another. Water waves are oscillations of water particles. Electromagnetic waves are oscillations of electric and magnetic fields.
1 of 26
Displacement
The size of the oscillation at a particular time and place.
2 of 26
Wavelength
Is the distance between two identical points on adjacent waves.
3 of 26
Amplitude
Is the maximum displacement caused by the wave.
4 of 26
Speed
Is how fast the disturbance moves, measured in metres per second (m/s)
5 of 26
Period
Is the time taken for one whole cycle of the wave to complete
6 of 26
Frequency
Is the number of waves that pass in each second, measured in hertz (Hz)
7 of 26
Longitudinal wave
shows oscillations parallel to the direction of motion of the wave, if the wave is moving from right to left the oscillation would be left to right.
8 of 26
Transverse wave
shows oscillation at right angles to the direction of motion, if oscillations was up and down the wave could be moving from left to right.
9 of 26
What wave can be polarised?
Transverse waves.
10 of 26
Polarised wave
Has oscillations in one direction only. A wave travelling from left to right could be polarised so oscillations were ONLY left-to-right and ONLY up-and-down
11 of 26
Nodes
nodes are points where there is NO oscillation
12 of 26
Antinodes
Antinodes are places where oscillation is greatest.

What is in the electromagnetic spectrum?
radiowaves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and Gamma rays
14 of 26
what wave in the electromagnetic spectrum has the highest frequency?
Gamma rays
15 of 26
what wave in the electromagnetic spectrum has the lowest frequency?
radiowaves
16 of 26
what wave in the electromagnetic spectrum has the shortest wavelength?
gamma rays
17 of 26
what wave in the electromagnetic spectrum has the longest wavelength?
radiowaves
18 of 26
Are the waves in the electromagnetic spectrum Transverse or longitudinal?
Transverse
19 of 26
What are the dangers of radiowaves?
There are no known dangers
20 of 26
What are the dangers of microwaves?
Internal heating of body tissue. No firm evidence that it can cause cancer
21 of 26
What are the dangers of infrared?
High intensity infrared can cause skin burns
22 of 26
What are the dangers of visible light?
High intensity can cause eye damage
23 of 26
What are the dangers of ultraviolet?
If absorbed by eyes or skin it can cause skin cancer or eye conditions
24 of 26
What are the dangers of X-rays?
Absorbed deep inside the body, can mutate/ damage DNA, kills cells and cause cancer
25 of 26
What are the dangers of gamma rays?
Absorbed deep inside the body, can mutate/ damage DNA, kills cells and cause cancer
