Oscillations
All waves are a series of oscillations that transfer energy from one place to another. Water waves are oscillations of water particles. Electromagnetic waves are oscillations of electric and magnetic fields.

Displacement
The size of the oscillation at a particular time and place.

Wavelength
Is the distance between two identical points on adjacent waves.

Amplitude
Is the maximum displacement caused by the wave.

Speed
Is how fast the disturbance moves, measured in metres per second (m/s)

Period
Is the time taken for one whole cycle of the wave to complete

Frequency
Is the number of waves that pass in each second, measured in hertz (Hz)

Longitudinal wave
shows oscillations parallel to the direction of motion of the wave, if the wave is moving from right to left the oscillation would be left to right.

Transverse wave
shows oscillation at right angles to the direction of motion, if oscillations was up and down the wave could be moving from left to right.

What wave can be polarised?
Transverse waves.

Polarised wave
Has oscillations in one direction only. A wave travelling from left to right could be polarised so oscillations were ONLY left-to-right and ONLY up-and-down

Nodes
nodes are points where there is NO oscillation

Antinodes
Antinodes are places where oscillation is greatest.

High intensity can cause eye damage

If absorbed by eyes or skin it can cause skin cancer or eye conditions

Absorbed deep inside the body, can mutate/ damage DNA, kills cells and cause cancer

Absorbed deep inside the body, can mutate/ damage DNA, kills cells and cause cancer
