1 of 13
Antibiotics kill the bacteria without killing..
Our body cells
2 of 13
Antibiotics don't destroy viruses because
Viruses reproduce using your own body cells
3 of 13
Bacteria can mutate, this is a problem because
some mutations cause them to be resistant to an antibiotic
4 of 13
The resistant bacteria will survive and reproduce which is a problem because...
The population of the resistant strain will increase
5 of 13
To slow down the rate of resistant strains it's important...
that doctors do not over prescribe antibiotics
6 of 13
You can investigate antibiotics by
growing microorganisms
7 of 13
How to test the action of antibiotics or disinfectats
Microorganisms are grown in agar jelly containing the carbohyrates, minerals, proteins and vitamins they need to grow. Hot agar jelly is poured into petri dishes.
8 of 13
Paper dics are soaked in different types of antibiotics and place on the jelly.
Antibiotic-resistant bacteria will grow and non-resistant bacteria will die
9 of 13
Equipment is sterilised to prevent contamination
Yeaahhh
10 of 13
If the equipment is not sterilised ...
Unwanted microorganisms in the culture medium will grow and affect the result
11 of 13
Inoculating loops are sterilised by
passing them through a flame
12 of 13
The petri dish must have a lid because
this will stop any microorganisms in the air contaminating the culture. It should also be taped on
