Outline the features of animal experiments for substance misuse
controlled, artificial environment e.g. caging, animals bred specifically for psychology, skinner box can be used to see if animals will self-administer drugs, must have permission and follow ethical guidelines
1 of 5
evaluate: validity
animals not used to a different, natural environment so the lab setting would be natural for them and so wouldn't affect their behaviour. the results of animal experiments are not valid results for /humans/ because of generalisabilty issues
2 of 5
evaluate: reliability
can have tighter controls over all variables for animals than you can have for humans such as their exact diet and when they eat
3 of 5
evaluate: generalisability
animals have different sized brains and different brain parts in places so we cannot be sure that drugs will have the same effects on animals as they do on humans e.g. a drug was ok when tested on rabbits but not on pregnant humans
