Animal and Plant Cells

?
What is the nucleus?
Controls all the activity of the cell and contains the genes on the chromosomes that carry instructions for making proteins needed to to build new cells of organisms
1 of 17
What is the cytoplasm?
A liquid gel in which most chemical reactions needed for life occur, for example, the first stages of cellular respiration
2 of 17
What is the cell membrane?
Controls the passage of substances into the cell, such as glucose and mineral ions. It controls the movement of substances such as urea or hormones out of the cell.
3 of 17
What is mitochondira?
Structures in the cytoplasm where oxygen and most of the energy is released during respiration
4 of 17
What are ribosomes?
Where protein synthesis takes place, making all the new proteins needed in the cell
5 of 17
What is a cell wall?
Made of cellulose that strengthens the cell and gives it support
6 of 17
What are chloroplasts?
They are green because they contain chlorophyll and chlorophyll absorbs light energy to make food for the plant by photosynthesis. Root cells do not have chloroplasts because they do not photosynthesise
7 of 17
What is the permanent vacuole?
A space in the cytoplasm filled with cell sap which is important for keeping cells rigid to support the plant
8 of 17
What are Algae?
Algae are simple single celled aquatic organisms. They can photosynthesise but are not plants.
9 of 17
What is a bacteria colony?
A population of millions of bacteria grown in a culture
10 of 17
What are plasmids?
Plasmids are small circular bits of DNA that carry extra genetic information. Often used by scientists in genetic engineering
11 of 17
What is flagella?
Long protein strands on bacteria that lash out to help move the bacteria
12 of 17
List the structures in an animal cell.
Cell membrane, Ribosomes, Mitochondria, Cytoplasm, Nucleus
13 of 17
List the structures found in a plant cell.
Cell membrane, Ribosomes, Mitochondria, Cytoplasm, Nucleus, Permanent vacuole, Chlorophyll, Cellulose cell wall
14 of 17
List the structures found in bacteria cells.
Cell membrane, Slime capsule, cell wall, plasmids, flagella, genetic material, cytoplasm, mitochondira
15 of 17
List the structures found in yeast cells.
Vacuole, Food storage granule, cytoplasm, cell wall, cell membrane, nucleus
16 of 17
In the production of what antibiotic is yeast important?
Penicillin
