Animal and Plant Cells

?
What is a Cell Membrane?
The cell membrane separates the interior (inside) of the cell from the environment outside. It is selectively permeable (it can control substances moving in and out of the cell).
1 of 12
What is a Nucleus?
The nucleus is the control centre of the cell. It contains chromosomes (which contain the cell's genetic material).
2 of 12
What are Ribosomes?
Ribosomes are responsible for synthesising (making) proteins.
3 of 12
What is Mitochondria?
Mitochondria are the ‘powerhouses’ of the cell. Aerobic respiration (process which uses sugar and oxygen to release energy) releases energy in the mitochondria.
4 of 12
What's Cytoplasm?
Cytoplasm is a jelly-like fluid that fills the cell. It is where most of the cell’s chemical reactions take place.
5 of 12
What is Permanent Vacuole?
A permanent vacuole is a fluid-filled sac that stores water. It is enclosed in a membrane (a wall that substances can pass through). It can make up as much as 90% of a plant cell’s volume
6 of 12
What are Chloroplasts?
Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll, which is needed for the process of photosynthesis
7 of 12
What is a Cell Wall?
The cell wall surrounds the cell and is made of cellulose. The cell wall increases the structural strength of the cell.

Name two differences between plant and animal cells
1. Many Plant cells can differentiate throughout their life while animal cells only differentiate at the start of its development 2. Animal Cells usually divide to replace cells and repair tissues so they rarely make new tissues while plant cells do.
9 of 12
When does differentiation occur?
When cells acquire new sub-cellular structures
10 of 12
Which Sub-cellular structures does an animal cell contain?
Cell Membrane, Cytoplasm, Nucleus, Ribosomes and Mitochondria

Name an example of cell differentiation
f you cut a small section off a plant stem and plant it, some cells in the plant stem are able to differentiate to create new root tissue. This allows a whole new plant to grow. You don't see this when you cut off a human`s foot.
