Who were peasants? Who were the ceorls?
Peasants made up most of the population and worked for local lords. Ceorls were peasants who were free to go and work for other lords but they still had to work for their local lord. A peasant could work their way up to become a thegn.

What were the thegns(thanes)? What were they promoted to and what was their role?
Thegns were local lords who lived in manor houses. They could be promoted to earls and their role was to provide for men in the fyrd (army) when needed.

Who were the witan and what did they do?
The witan were a council of advisors to the king made up of earls and archbishops. The king decided who was on the witan. They discussed threats and disputes. And they had a large role in choosing a new king.

Earls were the most imporatant people after the king. The area they controlled was called an earldom. They could be demoted to thanes. They were part of the witan.

The king and his role was to make laws, protect his people and decide who was on the witan.

How did earls help the king to run the country?
They collected taxes and kept 1/3 of the taxes. They were in charge of justice and legal punishments in their earldom. They had great military power and had a group of highly trained soldiers called housecarls.

Why was Edward the confessor so powerful?
He had a strong army. His earls and thegns were a powerful military force. He was a respected and pious law maker and wanted to keep things peaceful.

Why was Edwards power limited?
Half of the country still had strong danish links from the vikings invasions and wanted to live by their own laws and rules. Earl Godwin could put pressure on Edward to do things his way. Edward and Godwin fell out and edward forced him into exile

He was king from 1042-1066. He controlled lawmaking,money,taxation,land ownership,and the military.

England had a population of 2 million people. Almost everyone farmed land. It was a christian country therefore religion played a large role in everyday life. Was under the threat of vikings.Well organised goverment.

How were slaves seen? How did normans see slavery? How did slaves becdome peasants?
They were seen as property and almost everyone had a slave but the normans saw this as cruel Slaves became peasants if they were freed from their masters. Peasants became slaves to supprot family.

People would worry about what would happen to them after they died

English churches were organised into large areas controlled by bishops who were very rich and important people
