Sandra Bem
3 of 16

High androgyny is associated with psychological well-being. They are better equipped to adapt a range of situations and contexts
4 of 16

A rating scale of 60 traits (20 female, 20 male, 20 neutral) to produce scores across two dimensions
5 of 16

(A03) STRENGTH: Validity and reliability
-BSRI developed by asking 50 male and 50 female judges to rate 200 traits in terms of how desirable they were for men and women
7 of 16
What was found?
The traits that were the highest scores in each category became the 20 masculine and 20 feminine traits on the scale.
8 of 16
Why was this valid?
The BSRI was then piloted with over 1000 students-results broadly corresponded with the participants description of their gender identity
9 of 16
Why did it have high test-retest reliability?
A follow up study: involved a smaller sample of the same students revealed similar scores when the students were tested a month later
10 of 16
(A03) WEAKNESS: androgyny and psychological well-being
Some researchers have argued that people who display a greater proportion of masculine traits are better adjusted as they are more highly valued in Western society (ADAMS AND SHERER)
11 of 16
What did this suggest?
Bem's research may not have taken adequate account of the social and cultural context in which it was developed
12 of 16
(A03) WEAKNESS: Oversimplifies a complex concept
It is too complex to be reduced to a single score
13 of 16
What was an alternative to the BSRI?
Personal Attribute Questionnaire: replaces masculinity-femininity dimension with one that measures instrumentality and expressivity. PAQ is still based on the idea that gender can be quantified
14 of 16
What did Golombok and Fivush (1994) claim?
Gender identity is a much more global concept than is suggested by these scales. People's interests and perception of their abilities should be considered
15 of 16
(A03) WEAKNESS: Why does it have cultural and historical bias?
Bem's scale is made up of stereotypical ideas of masculinity and femininity - lacks in temporal validity
