Aim

Become familiar with the the bones, triangles, vessels and nerves of the neck.

Outcomes

1. Identify the surface landmarks of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, trapezius muscle, carotid sheath, accessory nerve, hyoid bone and laryngeal cartilages, external jugular vein

2. Identify the borders and main contents of the posterior and anterior triangles of the neck

3. Draw a diagram to explain the significance of the arrangements of the fascial layers in the neck

4. Describe in outline the pattern of lymphatic drainage in the neck

5. Identify the carotid sheath, its contents and relations (CCA, IJV, CNX, sympathetic chain)

6. Identify the main branches of the external carotid artery

7. Consider the function of the cranial nerves, in particular IX, X, XI, XII

8. Examine cervical vertebrae and their distinguishing features
