Median/sagittal plane
Vertical plane passing through the centre of the body

Coronal/frontal plane
Vertical plane at right angles to the sagittal plane - it splits the body into anterior and posterior

Transverse plane
A horizontal plane that divides the body into cranial and caudal sections (cross section)

Superior/inferior

Cranial/caudal
How close something is to the head and how close something is to the tail

Anterior/posterior
Refers to what is in front and what is to the back of the subject

Dorsal/ventral
The back or upper side of the surface of an organism and the front or lower side

Palmar/plantar
Palm of the hand and the sole of the foot

Superficial/deep
Something near the surface and somewhere far from the surface

Proximal/distal
Parts of a feature that are close to or distant from the main mass of the body

Medial/lateral
Refers to the structures close to the centre of the organism and away from organism

Unilateral
On one side of the body

Bilateral
On both sides of the body

Ipsilateral
On the same side as another structure

Contralateral
On the opposite side to another structure

Extension/flexion
Movements that increase or decrease the angle between two body parts

Opposition
The movement that involves grasping of the thumb and fingers

Reposition
Restoring to its natural condition

Pronation/supination
At the forearm, it is a rotational movement where the hand and upper arm are turned inwards and outwards

Abduction/adduction
These refer to motions that move a structure away from or towards the centre of the body

Medial/lateral rotation
Rotation towards or away from the midline of the body

Dorsiflexion
Extension at the ankle or wrist joint

Palmarflexion
Decreasing the angle between the palm and the anterior forearm

Plantarflexion
The movement which decreases the angle between the sole of the foot and the back of the leg

Eversion/inversion
Movements that tilt the sole of the foot away from or towards the midline of the body

Protraction/retraction
These refer to an anterior or posterior movement

Elevation/depression
Movement in a superior or inferior direction
