What is a filler?
Filling a gap with a non-essential word or sound (e.g. 'um', 'er', 'like').

To correct or replace things as you go along (e.g. choo... then you choose).

The tempering of a statement ti make it tentatitive (e.g. 'might', 'possibly').

Making short noises or minimal responses to show you agreement or both (e.g. mmm, yeah).

Adding a short question on the end of a declarative sentence in order to prompt a response (e.g. you need to improve, don't you think?).

The movement of a conversation between topics - this can move from speaker to speaker.

What is phatic communication?
Speech which is really just designed to establish and maintain social relationships and does not carry significant meaning.

What are discourse markers/connectives?
Words that aid the flow of discourse (e.g. the adverb of time 'then', the connective 'and').
