What do the prisoners represent?
Humans- people in the empirical world.

What does the cave represent?
The empirical world.

What do the chains represent?
Our senses that cause us to accept all that we see and hear.

What do the shadows represent?
The illusions that we experience; our sense data.

What does the fire represent?
A copy of the form of the good that allows us to see the shadows.

What does the escapee represent?
The philosopher.

What does the difficult ascent show?
That the road to philosophy is hard.

What does the outside world represent?
The real world- the realm of the forms.

What does the sun represent?
The form of the good, the highest form which enables knowledge of other forms.

What does the return to the cave mean?
The philosopher returning back to enlighten the others as he feels it's his duty.

What does the difficulty adjusting to the light mean?
Once we have true knowledge it is difficult to adjust back to the realm of opinions (empirical world).

What does the persecution of the escapee represent?
That, like Socrates (Plato's teacher), the escapee will be ridiculed and mistreated.
