When and where is the play set?
The play is set in 1912. 1912 was two years before the first world war started. The whole play takes place inside of the house of the Birling house in the made up industrial city of Brumley in the north west midlands.

The play was written in 1945 just after world war 2 ended. This is significant because Priestley used a lot of dramatic irony to make Mr Birling look foolish eg. "The Titanic is unsinkable." and "The Germans don't want war."

Why do Eric and Sheila Birling show socialist views towards the end of the play?
Eric and Sheila presents socialist views as they are a part of the younger generation. Priestley was a socialist, so by presenting these views with Eric and Sheila, it shows that the younger generation are the future and should be more socialist.

Socialism vs Capitalism
The play was set in a very capitalist society. Arthur and Sybil Birling show capitalist views and represent a capitalist society. Sheila and Eric show a younger generation of socialist. Eva represents the working class.

Women
At this time period, women were seen as second class citizens and needed to get married to be able to provide for themselves. Single women had no one to provide for them as their families would not have them anymore.
