What is ammonia?
Ammonia is an alkaline gas made from nitrogen and hydrogen.
1 of 7
What can ammonia be used for?
Ammonia can be used in to make fertilisers (to help with the growing population which needs more food to eat) and to make nitric acid.
2 of 7
What type of reaction is ammonia?
Ammonia is a reversible reaction, meaning that nitrogen and hydrogen can make ammonia, but ammonia can decompose to make hydrogen and nitrogen.
3 of 7
What are the reactants of ammonia?
Nitrogen (N) from the air, Hydrogen (H) from natural gas or cracking of crude oil.
4 of 7
What do the costs of making a new substance depend on?
The price of energy, the labour costs, how quickly the substance can be made, cost of material and costs of equipment.
5 of 7
Describe the pressure, temperature and percentage yield.
A low temperature increases the yield, but reaction takes too slow. A higher pressure increases yield, but can be expensive as yield increases. A catalyst increases the rate of the reaction but doesn't change the percentage yield.
6 of 7
Why must the percentage yield and rate of reaction be high?
It is to produce enough daily yield of product.
