Immigration Policies
Led to immigration dropping from 4,000,000 to 500,000 per year.

1917: Literacy tests
Designed to test literacy skills of applicants; did not have to be able to read and write in English. Passing these tests was dependent on knowledge of American history and geography.

1921: Quota Act
Reduced immigration from Eastern and Southern Europe to 3% of the 1910 Census. Exceptions made for professionals e.g. nurses, artists. No restrictions on Canadian or Latin American immigrants.

1924: Johnson-Reed Immigration Act
Reduced immigration from Eastern and Southern Europe to 2% of the 1890 Census. Prevented immigration from China and Japan.

1927: National Origins Act
Maximum of immigrants from anywhere capped at 150,000, with none from China or Japan.
