What was metal music?
revived in the 80's, had a 20% share in popular music in 1982, 11 of the 50 bestselling songs were metal in 1988, in 1985 The parentd Resource centre pressured Mtv to stop its production of metal

What was Rap music?
first recorded in 1979- it had controversial songs such as “how we gonna make the black nation rise?” Rap was sexist as ice cube said he had “made the neighbourhood pregnant” so “what I need to do is kick the ***** in the stomach”

Music industry accepted voluntary rating system after a suicide letter from two teens contained metallicas “fade to black” lyrics

Who were the Dead Kennedys?
Leader of the dead Kennedys= he was arrested in 1986 for distributing harmful materials to a minor, a young LA girl bought the “Frankenchrist” album which has a poster with 10 penises and a Vulvae

2 live crew= they had a song called “me so horny” which was seen as illegaly obscne

Who was Madonna?
Madonna= she promoted safe sex, “Justify my love” (1990) was the first music video to be banned from MTV, religious imagery and a sex scene with christ in “like a prayer” offended the Religious Right

What did Dergulation of TV lead to?
Deregulation of TV in the 80's led to the growth of cable so by 1990 90% of homes had cable service, there was more sex and violence on cable as they were not subject to the same guidelines.

What was MTV?
MTV was the most significant cable channel in the 80's with a 24 hour music video channel, it showed Michael Jackson, MTV was accused of sexism because of videos like “hot for teacher”

What was the growth of aids?
AIDs crisis= over 46,000 Americans died from it in 1989, there were over 80,000 confimed cases, this was called the “Gay plague”

What was the Ryan White care act?
he was a haemophiliac who contracted aids through a blood transfusion, he was the national spokesperson for aids sufferers, he died in 1990 and congress granted $220 million to help victims of Aids

What was violence like in films?
Silence of the lambs (1991)- had a cannibal reference “having an old friend for dinner”, the A-team- 4th most popular TV show in 1983 it had violence similar to Tom and Jerry, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

What was war like in films?
born on the fourth of july (1989)= memoirs of a disabled and disillusioned vietnam war veteran, Gentleman (1981)= showed an admirable war veteran and a female lead who wanted to simply capture an officer husband

How did Hollyood and TV deal with homosexuality?
barely dealt with in film, Longtime Companion (1989) dealth with aids but was a lot less popular than Indiana Jones, NBC considered a gay sitcome “Love sidney” but didnt because they were scared of reactions

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990-96) and Beverly Hills 90210 assosiated being sexually active with “being cool” and showed that being a teenage Virgin was embarrasing, Jerry springer (1991-presemt) had frank discussions of sex

Fatal attraction (1987)= a single women tried to seduce a hapily married man, when the “good mother” killed her off men in the theatre screamed “Kill the *****”

Roseanne (1988-97)= most watched Tv show in 1989-90= showed a working class mother working in an under skilled Job to come home and do all of the housework

Cagney and Lacey (1982-88)= 2 female detectives, the one with the idealised family was more stable and content than the single detective with multiple partners

Last temptation of christ (1988)= showed Jesus's sexual desires for Mary Magdalyn
