The Underground Railroad
From 1786 runaway slaves were helped to escape northwards along a secret route.50,000 slaves were helped. Harriet Tubman escaped from being a slave and made 19 trips saving other slaves

Bleeding Kansas
By 1856 Kansas has two opposing governments, one for slavery the other for anti-slavery.700 pro-slavery supporters had a riot. After the federal government got involved a decision was made in 1858 that Kansas was a free state.

John Brown and Harpers Ferry
1859, Brown & 19 followers seized weapons of the federal government. It was believed he was going to arm a slave rebellion so he was tried for treason and hanged. To northern abolitionists he was a hero, to southerners the north wanted to destroy
