The breakdown of the Missouri Compromise
At the same time it was agreed that this new Kansas-Nebraska Act meant that the Missouri Compromise no longer applied.So new states north of the Missouri line could become slave states. This changed US politics as a new political party emerged.

What did the North and South want?
North= new states to be free states where slavery is illegal, South=new states to be slave states where slavery is legal. Neither side wanted to be outnumbered, 1848- 15 slave and 15 free states.

What was the American Civil War(ACW)?
A civil war is when there is a war between 2 sides within the same nation. The ACW lasted for 4 years(1861-65). It started due to uncompromising differences between N&S.

The thirteenth Amendment of the US constitution was ratified(changed), which banned slavery in America.

Socially= Slave owners,Land owners,women with no husband for kids. Economically= Resources, rations,loosing money

What was Recruitment and Conscription?
At the start of the civil war people to rushed to join armies of both sides. Everyone thought this would be a short war but it wasn't. The Confederacy(south) introduced conscription first in April 1862. Men of 18-35 had to serve for 3 years.

What was the Emancipation Proclamation?
1863 Lincoln signed it. It was made to free slaves&end slavery. Also made to; give north a moral cause, slave labour was propping up the confederate war effort and it would remove danger of France and Britain support confederate states

What followed from the Emancipation Proclamation?
African Americans could join the armed forces, although they didn't get the same treatment as white and they couldn't become officers. Over 38,000 black people died by the end of the war.If they were captured by the south they'd go back into slavery.

When was the EP legal? What did Lincoln change about the war?
The Emancipation Proclamation wasn't legal until 1865 when they ,made the thirteenth amendment. Lincoln changed the war from being about the social&economic differences to ending slavery.

What was the secession?
It lead to the civil war. Where the south declared they were independent from the north, when Lincoln wanted to abolish slavery. North=Union, South=Confederacy. Both split into 2 countries.

What was the role of women during the Civil War?
They volunteered as unpaid nurses, while others took over the job of men who left to fight and became farmers, managers, owners. When the war ended women wanted to continue these roles. The war inadvertently helped change the status of women
