Why were the odds of a Confederate victory very low?
In both industrial and financial resources and in terms of manpower the Confederates were outclassed by the Union forces. The Union also cut off vital imports to the South through the enforcement of a naval blockade.

What happened on the 21st July 1861?
The battle of Bull Run happened, surprisingly, the Confederates beat the Unions. This deeply demoralized Union troops who retreated in disorder to Washington.

How did Ulysses S. Grant follow this loss (Union commander)?
He forced his way south, capturing Memphis, Vicksburg and New Orleans. They had gained complete control of the Mississippi river and had split the Confederacy in two!

This nickname was judged from the colour of their uniform. The Union wore Blue uniform and the Confederates wore a Grey uniform, hence their names.
