AMAZON RAINFOREST - CAUSES OF DEFORESTATION

HideShow resource information
Commercial and subsistence farming - Cattle
- 80% of deforestation in Brazil has been for making way for livestock rearing. - Land cant be used for long - quality of pasture quickly declines so more rainforest is cleared. - Cattle farming for both commercial and subsistence (own use) purposes.

Commercial and subsistence farming - Crops
- Deforestation to make way for vast plantations (for crops such as bananas, palm oil and sugar cane). - Amount of rainforest cleared for soybean doubled between 1990 and 2010. - Soil wont sustain crops for long - more deforestation.

Road building
-Roads needed to bring in equipment+transport products to markets.-Involves cutting great swathes through rainforest.-Makes forest accessible to many exploiters of rainforest.-Trans-Amazonian Highway: Built 1972+, 4,000km long+opened up remote areas.

Logging
- 3% of rainforest's deforestation is for logging. - Mahogany is popular because timber companies can sell it to other countries to make furniture. - Smaller trees are used as wood for fuel. - Vast areas of forest are cleared in one go.

Mineral extraction
- Some minerals(that developing countries need)are found beneath tropical rainforests. - In Amazon, gold is mainly mined. - 1999: 10,000 hectares were used for gold mining. Today, 50,000 hectares is used.-Rainforest suffers badly - it is clear-felled

Energy development
- Unlimited water supply is used for dams to generate hydro-electric power. - Vast areas are flooded, which gradually rot.
