WMM - who developed it? Why was it developed?
Baddeley & Hitch 74’. Developed due to studies suggesting STM had different stores. Baddeley in 86 conducted a study showing STM can perform two tasks at once.
1 of 11
Components of working memory - Central Executive
involved with decision making, problem solving and making plans. No storage capacity. Has control over the ‘slave systems’
2 of 11
Episodic buffer
Added by Baddeley (2000) realised the model needed a general store which has limited capacity. integrates info from all stores and LTM.
3 of 11
Visuospatial Sketchpad
‘inner eye’ processes visual (how we look) and spatial (relationship between things) info in separate components
4 of 11
Logie (95) suggest about visuosketchpad
Logie (95) suggested visuospatial sketchpad can be divided into visual cache (store) and inner scribe which deals with spatial relations.
5 of 11
Phonological Loop
‘inner voice’ deals with auditory info. Baddeley further divided the loop into phonological store and articulatory process
6 of 11
Evaluation, advantages. What did Shallice and __________ do?
Studied KF, motorcycle accident. had no problem with LTM learning but some parts of STM impaired. Inner eye in tact but lost inner voice. Brain damage restricted by phonological loop.
7 of 11
What does WMM see STM as?
group of processes rather than single unilateral store like the MSM suggests due to studies like this. Also places emphasis on visual encoding as opposed to just phonological suggested by MSM.
8 of 11
What is Memory portrayed as?
active process rather than passive stores, cognitive psychologists find it useful to see attention and memory as part of the same system.
9 of 11
Weaknesses - What is there uncertainty into? What did Eslinger and Damasio feel?
how CE works but is referred to a lot. Eslinger and Damasio 85’ feel the notion of a single CE is wrong and that there are probably several components.
10 of 11
Why is the WMM limited?
only explained as well as recently activated LTM. MSM explains sensory memory, STM and LTM as a linear process with more attention paid to the L TM than the WMM provides.
