What is an Alloy?
An Alloy is a mixture of metals OR a metal and at least one other element.
1 of 5
How does adding another element reduce the metals atoms sliding over each other?
The added element disturbs the regular arrangement of the metal atoms, so the layers do not slide over each other easily.
2 of 5
Now what is the metal?
An ALLOY.
3 of 5
How does the added element effect the metal?
It is now stronger and harder than pure metals. Many of the metals we use everyday are ALLOYS.
4 of 5
How are pure metals (soft metals) made harder to be used everyday? (E.g. pure copper, gold and aluminum).
They are mixed with small amounts of similar metals to make them hardre for everyday use.
