It is broken to suggest the loss of hope from the beginning of the play that Larry is coming back.

Because Mother will not accept that Larry is gone and believes her will come back, therefore it means that 'when' he does come back Ann will be waiting and everything will go back to normal.

What is the significance of the line "To him they were all my sons?"
Brings in the theme of social responsibility and Joe is finally able to accept responsibility for his actions. Also Larry is turned into a symbol and represents all of the men he killed, therefore the 21 men turn into his sons through the symbol.

What is the importance of George coming back?
He allows us to hear what happened from Steve and also everyone is all there to hear the truth, so it seems fitting for him to have come back so it was the way it was before they all left.

Survivors guilt. "What you have is really loot, and there's blood on it." Suggesting how people had to die for his dad to make a business and make himself rich, links more to how he killed 21 men.

War profiteering-A person or organisation that profits from warfare or by selling weapons. Domestic Tragedy- A piece of drama that the audience can relate to and faces life problems. Social responsibility- Man only thinking of himself&his family.

Why is Guilt an important part of the play?
It surrounds the whole play, Keller is guilty of killing 21 men and driving his son to death, but tries to pretend that he is the 'hero' who is a good guy.

How does the American Dream link in with the play?
The American dream happened during the time, it is used the war and destroyed America to build up a business and make more money. Joe's business has thrived due to it.

Why is Families important?
Chris has always had to put his family first, sacrificing what he wants. Keller lies about what he did to keep his family together. Mother doesn't want to break the family so keeps Joe's secret.

How strong are the Father and Son relationships within the play?
Keller does everything to make sure that Chris had a future and money for when he dies. Larry ends his life because of what his dad did, Keller then ends his life which can suggest he's trying to make it up to his son.

It suggests how he doesn't want to see the bad in the world and also he wants to look at what makes people tick, which links to his business side.

It acts as a confirmation that Larry is coming back?

Mother says "It's so funny.. everything decides to happen at the same time. This month is his birthday; his tree blows down, Annie comes." What does this suggest?
First it can suggest how Annie is the spark that fuels everything and could say that Larry will finally return now she is back. But it can foreshadow the unravelling of secrets, so that everyone knows the truth.

Why does Mother make grape juice for George?
Its to remind him of home and to get him to come round with the idea that they are the still Keller's and that Joe is innocent.

Chris says "If I were human anymore." What does it mean?
It has dehumanised Chris, because he knows the truth he is no longer blind and he is no longer human because he cannot do the right thing and lost his right for justice. Sees Keller's action as being animal-like.

At the end of the play Chris says "I never saw you as a man. I saw you as my father." what does it mean?
Suggest how fathers are meant to protect their sons, but Keller ultimately killed his son.

How does the play end?
Keller shoots himself and Mother tells Chris to "live" so that the whole situation no longer holds him back and she finally puts him first.
