Alkanes

?
What are alkanes?
The main component of natural gas and crude oil.
1 of 13
Main use of Alkanes?
Used as fuels to generate heat.
2 of 13
General in general formula of alkanes?
CnH2n+2
3 of 13
Are alkanes saturated or unsaturated?Explain.
Alkanes are saturated as they only contain single covalent bonds.
4 of 13
what is a hydrocarbon?
only contains hydrogen and carbon
5 of 13
What is a sigma bond?
it is the result of the overlap of two orbitals, one from each bonding atom.
6 of 13
What is the shape of alkanes including bond angle?
Tetrahedral 109.5
7 of 13
what is the trend in boiling point in alkanes as chain increases?why?
boiling point increases because there are more london forces as the molecules have a large surface area so more surface contact is possible between molecules.
8 of 13
what is the effect of branching on boiling point?
Branched chains have lower boiling points. This is because there are fewer surface points of contact between molecules of the branched alkanes, giving fewer london forces.
9 of 13
what is the reactivity of alkanes? why?
they are unreactive. this is becuase thye have stromg sigma bonds, the c-c bonds are non-polar and the electronegativity of carbon and hydrogen is so similar that the c-h bonds can be considered to be non-polar.
10 of 13
what is the word equation of combustion alkanes?
alkane + oxygen -> carbon dioxide and water
11 of 13
what is the word equation for the incomplete combustion of an alkane?
alkane + oxygen -> carbon monoxide and water
12 of 13
what is the reagent necessary for the reaction between alkanes and halognes?
UV light
