What issues did the size of Russia have for its rulers?
Poor communications and there were few paved roads to big cities, making travel impossible in winter on non- paved roads.

Believed Russia should adopt certain economic and political values from the west. Thought that Russia needed to revolutionise or be left behind.

Define Slavophiles
Stuck to slavic value and was pushed by the orthodox church, wanted to stick to the traditions of Russia.

What happened in 1837?
He went on a tour of 29 Russian provinces to build a good bond with his people. It led to him being the first tsar to worry asbout the actual wellbeing of his people.
