What are secure attachments?
Generally thought of as the most desirable attachment type, associated with psychologically healthy outcomes. In the Strange Situation this is shown by moderate stranger and separation anxiety and ease of comfort at reunion

What are insecure-resistant attachments?
An attachment type characterized by strong attachment and high anxiety. In the Strange Situation this is shown by high levels of stranger and separation and by resistance to be comforted at reunion

What are insecure-avoidant attachments?
An attachment type characterized by low anxiety but weak attachment. In the Strange Situation this is shown by low stranger and separation anxiety and little response to reunion - an avoidance of the caregiver

What was Ainsworth's aim?
How infants behave under conditions of mild stress and novelty – test stranger anxiety, separation anxiety and secure base concept.
Assess individual differences between mother-infants in terms of quality of attachment.

What was Ainsworth's procedure?
Eight episodes. – left alone with stranger, left alone etc.

What behaviours did Ainsworth record?
Recorded the proximity and contact seeking behaviours, contact maintain behaviours, proximity and interaction avoiding behaviours, contact and interaction resisting behaviours and search behaviours

What were Ainsworth's findings?
Infants explored more enthusiastically when mother present than when stranger entered and when mother left.
Reunion behaviours reflected 3 types of behaviours:
Insecure-avoidant – 20%
Securely attached – 75%
Insecure-resistant – 5%
