What context can Rahe's study be placed in?

Historical and social- 60's people think life is becoming more stressful (increased family break up, stressful jobs, divorce)- Psychologists- does this cause illness (immune system damage)- it would be vital to reduce stress levels if so.

Academic context- (1967)- looked at records of 5000 patients- created a list of 43 life events that occurred before illness- gave list to pps and they rated them (event score) whether more or less stressful than marriage- numerically assess stress

Rats- suggested stress lead to break down of the immune system- Rahe aimed to test on human pps- aimed to to this prospectively rather than retrospectively like in his original study (pps already hospitalised)

1.) to find out whether there was a correlation between stressful life events and illness 2.) Complete the study prospectively with a target population that isn't already ill.
