1 of 6
What are "Loci of Control"
Locus (sources) of control- internal- you control your own choices/behaviour- external- believe that your behaviour is shaped by others/fate
2 of 6
What happens if you have a high/low Locus of Control, and what does this mean for the older population?
Higher- tend to face less stress and so less likely to become ill So as the population gets older, it is important that the OAP's continue to make their own choices to prevent illness.

Lack of control leads to depression "learned helplessness"- when people have no control they give up like the walking corpses in concentration camps. L+R were trying to find if increased choice led tom improved wellbeing

What other context can L+R's study be placed in with the help of Ferrare (1962), describe his study
Academic context- observed the effect of older people not having a choice in where they lived. Group of 17 who had to move to an OAP home, 8 died by 4 weeks further 8 dies after 10 weeks (unexpected deaths) suggests lack of choice affects well being.
