This is moving from the autonomous state, where a person sees themselves as responsible for their actions into the agentic state where a person sees themselves as an agent for someone else's wishes.

Someone who is perceived to be in a position of social control within a situation .

How can Milgram's theories be applied to real-life situations?
Vietnam 1968, My Lai massacre, Lt William Calley ordered the platoon to murder everyone, and 500 villagers were killed. Murderer or obeying orders?

EVALUATION: Real Life Obedience
The holocaust - german doctors working at Auschwitz, shows irreversible transition into agentic state - evil, murderers that do not see it as their fault.

EVALUATION: Agentic state or just plain cruel?
In SPE, guards became increasinly cruel as prisoners became increasingly passive, and they were under no authority figure to act this way, which shows human nature can we cruel enough.
