Describe background to the ageing population
In 2005, 16% of UK pop 65+. By 2041, this could be 25%. Life expectancy between 2006-2012 gone from 77.5 to 78.9 for guys, 81.7 to 82.7 for girls. Baby booms in 40's now retiring, 60's baby boom will retire in next 2 decades.

What are the issues with the ageing population?
More elderly living in poverty, as working age population not large enough to pay for state pensions. Health service under pressure as old need more care. Avg hospital stay in 2005 for 75+ was 13 nights, 8 nights for UK average

What are the solutions?
Raise retirement age, raise from 65(men) 60(women) 68 for all by 2046. Encourage immigration of young to UK. 80% of EU migrants in 04 were under 34. Encourage women to have more kids & encourage people to take out private pensions
